Initial discussions concerning Chelsea during pre-season centered on Enzo Maresca’s approach to achieving optimal on-field balance with a sizable first-team roster. Nevertheless, the Blues have implemented fewer alterations to their Premier League starting XI this season (14 changes) than all but four other clubs. During the Sunday broadcast of Match of the Day 2, which provided analysis of the draw against Manchester United, former England midfielder Danny Murphy commented: “You build relationships and an understanding with players, where they’re going to be and sometimes without even looking.” He further stated regarding Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia: “The two midfielders [Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia] were excellent but, all over the pitch, they seem to be settled.” Murphy also noted the return of Reece James, adding: “It has been nice to see Reece James back as well. You forget what a wonderful talent he is, he’s so comfortable on the ball.” Addressing Chelsea’s midfield duo, former Manchester United defender Phil Jones remarked: “A big part of a manager’s job is to have that close relationship with the players and be someone that they can resonate with. Under Maresca, those two are blossoming.”
