Film enthusiasts have voiced their disappointment regarding the impending closure of a central cinema venue. Cineworld announced that its establishment located at Middlesbrough Leisure Park on Marton Road is scheduled to cease operations on January 19, a decision made as part of a national restructuring effort. This closure means the town centre will be without a cinema facility until a new three-screen complex, currently under construction in Captain Cook Square, is completed during the summer. Local film fan Mal Lythe commented: “Might as well just close Middlesbrough to be honest”. He further stated: “Cineworld has been my spot since 2007, it’s always been that reliable place for me.” Individuals commenting on a Facebook post announcing the closure expressed that they were “heartbroken” and “gutted” for the staff members. Middlesbrough’s location is one of six closures announced following a significant restructuring process, according to Cineworld. The leisure firm did not disclose the number of jobs that would be affected by these closures. However, a spokesperson indicated that the company plans to invest approximately £35 million across its estate, with a particular focus on refurbishing existing cinemas. Middlesbrough Council confirmed that work is progressing on a new “boutique” cinema in the town centre. The council also clarified that the Showcase Cinema at Teesside Park technically falls within its administrative boundary, whereas the retail section of that complex is under the jurisdiction of Stockton Borough Council.
