A Metropolitan Police officer has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving in connection with a crash that resulted in the death of a moped rider. PC Ian Brotherton, aged 32, is also accused of causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving. Cristopher De Carvalho Guedes died following the collision with a marked police van in Enfield, north London, on 12 October 2023. The 26-year-old Brazilian national passed away in hospital the subsequent day. These charges were filed after an investigation conducted by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), a police watchdog. The police van, which had its lights and sirens activated, drove through a red light on Southbury Road before colliding with Mr. Guedes, who was in the process of turning right into Baird Road. PC Ian Brotherton is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.
