A Metropolitan Police officer has been charged with assault following an incident on April 24, 2022, in Chigwell Road, Woodford, east London, where he Tasered a man who then fell from a garage, resulting in life-changing injuries. The Met Police confirmed that PC Liam Newman faces a charge of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm. Ch Supt Stuart Bell, the lead for policing in Redbridge, Havering, and Barking and Dagenham, stated he was “acutely aware” of the public’s concern regarding the incident. He added: “Our officers understand it is vitally important to maintain public trust and confidence, and that such matters are thoroughly investigated.“Given criminal proceedings are now active we must now allow the circumstances to be examined in open court.” The Met had referred the incident to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, which conducted an independent investigation before passing its findings to the Crown Prosecution Service. Any potential misconduct matters will be addressed after the court process is complete, the Met further noted.
