The Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Sir Mark Rowley, has stated that the force will be required to reduce its workforce by 2,300 officers and 400 staff in the coming year, attributing this necessity to a £450 million funding deficit. Addressing the London Policing Board, Sir Mark indicated that this action would have “a seriously detrimental impact” on the UK’s largest police service, which presently has a workforce of 33,473 officers and 11,178 staff. Sir Mark further explained that the options of divesting police properties and utilizing financial reserves “is no longer possible,” particularly as the operational demands on the force continue to rise. According to Sir Mark, these reductions are projected to impact the force’s capacity to address serious violence and organised crime, specifically affecting units such as the Flying Squad, its dogs unit, and its mounted branch. The implementation of these cuts could commence as early as January. He clarified that the current financial difficulties “are a cumulative impact of a decade or more,” rather than being solely attributable to the current year’s budget. Sir Mark noted that these projections are derived from planning assumptions, which are subject to revision until City Hall finalizes the budget settlement early next year. He emphasized the urgency, stating that further delay is not feasible, “or it will not be possible to achieve the reductions without uncontrolled consequences.” He also mentioned that efforts would be made to prevent compulsory redundancies, “but can’t guarantee we’ll avoid them entirely.” Additionally, the Met’s workforce includes 1,486 police community support officers and 1,177 special constables. During the meeting, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, who presided over the session, refrained from commenting directly on Sir Mark’s severe evaluation of the situation or his proposed actions. He did, however, attribute the circumstances to over a decade of accumulated budget pressures experienced during Conservative administrations.
