Individuals who have received assistance from a suicide prevention organization convened at a rugby club to recount their personal journeys. Sir Ian McGeechan, a director for Doncaster Knights and a former Scotland international and British & Irish Lions player, addressed attendees at the gathering, which was arranged to support Andy’s Man Club, an initiative offering a space for men to meet and converse. Accompanying Sir Ian was Rob Smith, who assumed the role of lead facilitator for the charity’s Doncaster groups subsequent to seeking support for himself. Mr. Smith stated: “Without Andy’s Man Club, there’s a real chance I wouldn’t be here today.” Andy’s Man Club was established in 2016 by Luke Ambler, a Halifax rugby league player, following the suicide of his brother-in-law. The organization currently operates 230 groups throughout the UK. The charity’s objective is to offer men a secure environment to discuss their mental well-being, providing assistance to over 4,500 individuals. Mr. Smith further commented: “Growing up, you had to be that strong person, you couldn’t show weakness, so I never spoke about any of my problems.“The hardest thing is that first step through the door.” Mr. Smith discovered the group online, and following his initial session, he remarked: “It felt like a weight had lifted off my shoulders. I didn’t talk a lot, but just knowing that I wasn’t on my own in how I was feeling made it all worthwhile.“I started that first night when there were 10 guys there, last week we had over 100.” In his keynote address, Sir Ian addressed the pressures, anticipations, and difficulties he encountered across the six Lions tours in which he participated, first as a player and subsequently as a coach. He recounted experiences such as engaging with fans, visiting educational institutions, and signing autographs. He stated: “It’s not all about what happens on the pitch, it’s about providing lots of support to young lads.” The gathering also featured a panel discussion concerning contemporary challenges for men. Sixty individuals were present at the event, and proceeds from each ticket sale will be allocated to support the initiatives of the Doncaster Knights Foundation and Andy’s Man Club.
