A football enthusiast managing a complex medical condition has stated that her specially trained alert dog provides a sense of security during matches. Nieve, a black labrador, is understood to be the first medical alert assistance dog to attend League One fixtures. This season, Nieve has been accompanying Emily Marston, a dedicated Northampton Town supporter, to home games at Sixfields Stadium. Nieve possesses the capability to detect changes in Ms. Marston’s scent and subsequently issue warnings, thereby affording Emily time to manage her condition, which can lead to sudden collapses and respiratory difficulties. Ms. Marston remarked: “I just feel safe. Instead of worrying about what might happen with my health, I can just enjoy the match.” Nieve’s inaugural attendance with Ms. Marston took place during the home match against Burton Albion in August. Approximately 25 minutes into the game, Nieve discreetly alerted her, enabling Ms. Marston to take preventive medication and avert a full medical episode. After her symptoms stabilized, Nieve performed pressure therapy to lower her heart rate, allowing Ms. Marston to return and “enjoy the rest of the game.” Nieve’s alert system initiates with an intense stare, progresses to nudging with her paw, and escalates to jumping if no response is received. “Thanks to Nieve, I can get somewhere safe and handle it before things get severe,” Ms. Marston commented. “She’s amazing.” The charity Medical Detection Dogs trained Nieve. Kim Jones, her instructor, stated: “We are very grateful to Northampton Town for working with Emily to enable Nieve to safely and comfortably attend matches.” Jones further elaborated, “We’ve built up to Nieve attending a match gradually and worked hard to prepare her for the crowds, sounds and smells.” Post navigation Avian Influenza Detected in Wild Bird in Republic of Ireland Tattoo Prices Expected to Rise Following New Safety Regulations in Wales
