Southampton manager Russell Martin has stated that the club’s staff is focused on rebuilding player confidence after a challenging start to the season. Martin described the team’s current standing at the bottom of the Premier League table with five points as “incredibly hurtful and embarrassing,” a comment made ahead of Sunday’s home game against Tottenham. Martin further explained the team’s efforts, stating, “The biggest job is to eliminate the external noise – but it is so difficult.” He added, “Maybe at times we are the only voices telling them that they are good enough.” Martin emphasized the broad spectrum of scrutiny players encounter, remarking, “Even family members will question them. I have been there as a player. Agents, supporters obviously, media pundits – everyone questions if you are good enough or not good enough.” He stressed the necessity of mental resilience, stating, “It is about being able to switch that off and zoom in and focus on what is really important.” Martin concluded by affirming the ongoing commitment, saying, “We are trying to do as well as we can with our lads.”
