Marks & Spencer (M&S) has disclosed intentions to establish a new retail location on the periphery of Ipswich, while simultaneously maintaining the operation of its existing outlets within the town. Contingent on receiving planning permission, M&S anticipates launching a 60,000-sq-ft (5574-sq-m) “show-stopping” store, offering both food and clothing, at the Copdock Interchange. The company projects this development will generate over 90 employment opportunities. This new establishment is intended to “sit alongside” the retailer’s current locations, which include a presence on Westgate Street in the town centre, another at Martlesham Heath Retail Park, and an M&S convenience store situated at Ipswich Hospital. Neil MacDonald, the leader of Ipswich Borough Council, expressed approval of the announcement, stating that the investment is expected to have a “positive impact.” Earlier in the current year, M&S had engaged in discussions regarding the acquisition of the former Toys R Us premises, also located at the Copdock Interchange. Will Smith, M&S property director, commented: “At the Copdock site, we have a unique opportunity to create a brand-defining M&S store in Ipswich alongside our existing Westgate Street presence.” He further stated: “The show-stopping store, offering food, clothing and beauty, would be one of the most modern in the UK and create over 90 new jobs.” MacDonald, a Labour councillor representing St John’s, remarked: “The impact on Ipswich can only be positive – millions of pounds of investment from a national retailer delivering almost a hundred new jobs and supporting the Suffolk supply chain is a real coup in this economy.” Matthew Hicks, the Conservative leader of Suffolk County Council, declared: “We fully support this deal with M&S because it retains their long-standing presence in the town centre whilst also breathing new life into a very visible entrance to Ipswich that has lain vacant for so long.”
