“If there’s any budding writers that need a little blonde nurse to make the background look busy, give me a shout,” Maria Pike humorously suggested. For almost 15 years, she has been a consistent presence in the popular BBC daytime drama Doctors. The series’ final episode is scheduled to air on Thursday, following the BBC’s decision in October last year to discontinue the show. Pike, a resident of Derbyshire, described her character, Nurse Tash – often recognized by fans as “the silent nurse” – as a “huge” part of her life, and noted that her last day of filming was “tough.” Pike works as a supporting artist, more commonly known as an extra. Initially, she was one of five nurses who appeared in the background of many scenes. “They just rotated us,” she explained. She elaborated on her journey: “But then to my advantage, one by one, they all drifted away which then left me, then they gave me a character name and that’s how it all started.” Pike recalled, “I was known for a long time as ‘the silent nurse’ and then when she got a line it was a big thing.” She further added about her lines: “They are always just a quick one-liner, nothing very complicated.” Pike values her role as a supporting artist, stating, “This is where it’s really quite nice to be a supporting artist, because I’ve got the beauty of being part of the cast and crew but I’ve not got the pressure of learning lots of lines.” The program typically attracts over a million viewers per episode, and Nurse Tash’s appearances could range from once a fortnight to three times a week. Pike even has a dedicated sub-group of fans who manage a Facebook page focused on spotting her on screen. “They love Tash spotting, they often say ‘there’s been a flash of Tash’,” she shared. Pike, from Heanor in Derbyshire, has also featured in Doctor Who, Crossroads, and EastEnders. However, she emphasized, “Doctors has always been my regular gig though.” She added, “It sounds like a twee thing to say, but it really is like being part of a family – it’s just been amazing.” The BBC One soap, which has been broadcast for 24 years since its inception in 2000, concluded filming on 1 March. The drama served as a launchpad for many prominent actors, including Eddie Redmayne, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Claire Foy, all of whom appeared in episodes. Pike’s most cherished day on-set, however, was her involvement in the 3,000th episode, which was filmed in Birmingham city centre and incorporated Bhangra dancing and “lots of action.” She plans to watch the final episode with her family and mentioned that the only drawback of the show ending was her inability to take her Nurse Tash name badge home. “I need to hound them in the wardrobe department to see if I can have that,” she added.
