Former Brazil and Real Madrid defender Marcelo has departed from Brazilian Serie A team Fluminense, with the club confirming his exit by mutual agreement. Marcelo is recognized as one of Real Madrid’s most decorated players and represented Brazil in 58 international matches. While Fluminense confirmed the 36-year-old’s departure on Saturday, the reasons for his contract termination were not disclosed by the club. This development follows a disagreement Marcelo had with coach Mano Menezes during Friday’s 2-2 draw against Gremio at the Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro. The incident occurred as the full-back, who secured 25 trophies during his 15-year tenure with Spanish club Real, was preparing to enter the game as a substitute. Coach Menezes reportedly reacted to a comment made by Marcelo and subsequently instructed him to return to the bench. During a post-match press conference, Menezes stated, “I was going to put Marcelo in at that moment, but I heard something I didn’t like, so I changed my mind,” without elaborating further on the details of the exchange. Marcelo began his career in Fluminense’s youth system, playing briefly for the senior team before transferring to Real in January 2007. He returned to his childhood club in February 2023, after a short period with Greek team Olympiakos in 2022. Notably, the stadium at Fluminense’s training facility was renamed in his honor two months prior. A statement released by the club affirmed, “The institutional and emotional ties between Fluminense and Marcelo continue to be maintained.” It added, “Fluminense thanks Marcelo and will continue, as always, to support his success in all his challenges.”
