A warning has been issued to residents of the Isle of Man following the identification of risks in certain internet routers, which render users susceptible to cyberattacks. This alert comes after a report published last month detailed 14 newly discovered vulnerabilities in some routers manufactured by DrayTek. The Cyber Security Centre for the Isle of Man has advised individuals who own or use these routers to ensure that updates have been performed and security patches applied. Approximately 440 of these devices are currently in use on the island, and the Centre indicated that hackers could gain access to sensitive information on affected devices. A spokeswoman for the centre explained that routers lacking updates could serve as an entry point for hackers to observe and modify data traffic passing through the device. This could include details such as login credentials, financial data, and personal correspondence. Such vulnerabilities could also enable the uploading of malware to a network. Individuals have also been advised to routinely check for updates from the centre and to consult their IT providers regarding patches and updates. Centre director Mike Haywood stated that ensuring the protection of these devices was essential, noting that vulnerable equipment remains “widespread across the island.”
