The distinctive Manx festive custom known as “Hunt the Wren” is scheduled for St Stephen’s Day, featuring singing and dancing throughout the island’s communities. According to Culture Vannin, this practice originates from pre-Christian eras and historically revolved around a wren, which legend identifies as “the king of all birds”. Currently, an artificial wren is employed, which is “hunted” and paraded through streets atop a wren pole. Culture Vannin states that while Hunt the Wren was initially documented on the island in the 1720s, it was already considered “to have been practised since time immemorial” at that point. The cultural organisation noted that the custom was formerly observed throughout the British Isles and sections of Northern Europe, but had “long since died out in all but the Isle of Man and Ireland”. The tradition has experienced a revival in certain areas of England in recent years, and notably, a renewed surge in popularity on the island. Prior to this, during the period recognized as the Manx cultural revival of the 1970s and 80s, Culture Vannin reported that Hunt the Wren had become “revitalised with a new focus on the dance”. Public assemblies are scheduled to occur across the island on St Stephen’s Day, also referred to as Boxing Day, this Thursday. In Ramsey, individuals are expected to convene at 10:30 GMT outside St Paul’s Church. Kirk Michael’s gathering point is outside the Mitre pub at 11:00. Participants will assemble at The Raven Pub in Ballaugh at 11:20. The celebrations in Sulby are set for 11:40 at the Sulby Glen Pub. In St. John’s, a meeting is planned for 10:30 in the Arboretum car park. Douglas residents will convene at 10:15 for a 10:30 commencement outside the Woodbourne Hotel. The Willaston School Car Park, situated opposite the Manor Pub, will also host performers in Willaston at 10:45. In Port St Mary, the meeting time is 10:00 in the Scoill Phurt-le-Moirrey school car park.
