Manchester United defender Tyrell Malacia made his return to play, featuring for the initial 45 minutes in the Manchester United Under-21 team’s EFL Trophy match against Huddersfield Town, concluding a 17-month period of injury-related difficulties. The left-back had been out of action since his appearance as a substitute in the Netherlands’ Nations League final loss to Croatia in June 2023. Subsequently, the 25-year-old underwent two knee surgeries, as his injury was found to be considerably more complex than first anticipated, leading to the cancellation of a scheduled return in February. During his inaugural season with the club in 2022-23, Malacia participated in 39 matches for United. With technical director Jason Wilcox, head of academy Nick Cox, and first-team coach Darren Fletcher in attendance, Malacia played the initial 45 minutes before Harry Amass substituted him. The £13m acquisition from Feyenoord primarily maintained a cautious approach. After 15 minutes, he executed his initial forward run along the left flank before passing the ball backward. He gradually became more comfortable in the match, and following a physical challenge that saw the Huddersfield forward brought to the ground, Malacia offered Rhys Healey a friendly tap as he moved past. Huddersfield secured a 4-1 victory in the game. The timeline for Malacia’s reintegration into first-team responsibilities following his extended period away from play is yet to be determined. United’s Under-21 squad is scheduled for another National League Cup fixture at Altrincham on 19 November. Malacia’s participation coincided with the day new head coach Ruben Amorim met members of United’s senior squad at the club’s Carrington training facility. Luke Shaw, Mason Mount, Leny Yoro, Kobbie Mainoo, and Toby Collyer were engaged in rehabilitation for their respective injuries when Amorim arrived. Serious training activities for Amorim are not expected to commence until next week. His non-international players who are fit have been granted a break, while most of his international players are not due back until mid-next week, resulting in restricted preparation time for Amorim’s inaugural match as coach against Ipswich Town on 24 November.
