A man who caused the death of his three-week-old infant son while experiencing the onset of a severe psychotic illness has been issued a hospital order. Kadees Mohammed, a Birmingham resident, was convicted of manslaughter last month. This conviction followed the death of his son, Ibrahim, who sustained fatal head injuries on 18 October 2022. Birmingham Crown Court was informed that the 31-year-old, who had undiagnosed schizophrenia, awoke during the night and killed Ibrahim. He also assaulted his wife and mother when they attempted to intervene. During the sentencing of Mohammed, who resides on Dovey Road, Mr Justice Choudhury stated that the defendant’s mental state at the time preceded a severe illness. He added, “The tragedy is that your condition was undiagnosed until it was too late.” The jury was told that in the weeks leading up to the attack, Mohammed had become preoccupied with the belief that he might have ADHD and was potentially grappling with his sexuality. The day prior to the attack, he had visited a mosque and began displaying delusional behavior. The court heard that he had asserted he was unclean, had seen the Prophet Muhammad, was the “vessel of God,” and that his family’s food was poisoned. Ibrahim sustained multiple skull fractures during the attack, with post-mortem examinations indicating that every bone was broken. Subsequently, Mohammed was found guilty by the jury of manslaughter due to diminished responsibility and two charges of wounding. Mr Justice Chowdhury, in ordering the defendant’s detention at a secure mental health facility, stated that Mohammed had been “by all accounts a kind and loving man.” The judge added that Mohammed had cherished his family before experiencing a “complete aberration.” During the sentencing hearing, the court was informed that Mohammed, who had been employed by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, had proven to be a “model patient” at the West Midlands secure facility where he is currently held. Mohammed, participating via video link, seemed to listen attentively to the sentencing proceedings. Following Mohammed’s conviction last month, Ibrahim’s mother released a statement via West Midlands Police, honoring her “beautiful” son. She stated, “My love for you is eternal. I know that you are no longer with me but your precious belongings are so dear to me.” She continued, “I imagine how life would have been with you by my side. I would have watched you grow, laughed with you and wiped your tears.” “You will remain in my memories for the rest of my life like a beautiful flower. Love from your mum.”
