A paedophile described as “monstrous” has received a 21-year prison sentence for repeatedly filming himself sexually assaulting a child. George Bellwood, 32, of Darlington, engaged in these “horrific sex acts” over several years, often providing the victim with his phone as a distraction, according to proceedings at Durham Crown Court. He also accumulated thousands of indecent images of children and distributed them to other paedophiles online. Bellwood initially denied his actions, which inflicted additional trauma on his victim, before ultimately pleading guilty to 19 offences, among them the rape of a child under 13 years old. Judge Joanne Kidd stated that Bellwood, residing on Zetland Street, had perpetrated the “most heinous, monstrous and violent abuse” as part of a “campaign of rape.” The victim expressed fear regarding the consequences of asking Bellwood to stop, with the judge noting that the victim’s “tears caused no reflection or deterrent” to the paedophile’s conduct. Prosecutor Jonathan Walker reported that Bellwood’s offenses were uncovered after the child confided in a teacher about the situation, with the young victim informing the teacher of suicidal thoughts. A statement from the victim’s mother, read in court, asserted that Bellwood had deprived the victim of their childhood, causing devastating and extreme physical and emotional trauma that would likely persist throughout their life. “I have lost my happy child,” the woman stated. She further commented: “In order to keep children safe [Bellwood] should serve as long as possible.” “He clearly doesn’t feel any remorse for his actions,” she added. She also noted that Bellwood’s denial of the offenses for many months caused additional distress to the victim, who was repeatedly required to recount the events to police and lawyers. Judge Kidd characterized Bellwood’s initial refusal to admit the offenses, along with the evident “debilitating trauma” his actions inflicted on his victim, as “cynical,” demonstrating a “level of arrogance [and] lack of remorse.” Mr. Walker stated that following Bellwood’s arrest, police discovered thousands of indecent images on his phone, comprising 1,043 photos and videos classified in the most serious category. The court was informed that Bellwood also transmitted indecent images to other paedophiles he had encountered online, including a social media app group consisting of 146 individuals. Robert Mochrie, Bellwood’s barrister, stated that he could present no mitigating circumstances for the perpetrator’s “truly abhorrent behaviour.” Judge Kidd mandated that Bellwood must serve an additional four years on an extended license following the completion of his prison term. Following the sentencing, Detective Constable Melissa Lamb of Durham Police commented that it was a “deeply upsetting” case and described Bellwood’s crimes as “unimaginable.” She commended the victim’s courage in reporting Bellwood, whom she characterized as “extremely dangerous.” For updates, follow BBC Tees on X, Facebook, Nextdoor, and Instagram.
