A 21-year-old individual has been sentenced to six years in prison after confessing to the killing of a man in Aberdeenshire, an act that involved stabbing the victim 13 times during a violent dispute concerning money. Michael Jenkins, aged 24, who hailed from Workington, Cumbria, passed away following the arrival of emergency services at the scene of the incident in Fraserburgh in June of the previous year. Alfie Whelan had initially faced a murder charge; however, prosecutors had earlier agreed to his guilty plea for the lesser charge of culpable homicide, citing provocation as the basis. Whelan received a six-year prison sentence at the High Court in Edinburgh, which will be succeeded by a four-year period of supervision. Chris McKenna, the prosecutor, had previously informed the High Court in Glasgow that a “violent altercation” occurred, during which Mr Jenkins sustained 13 stab wounds from a dagger. The victim, who was in Fraserburgh for employment purposes, staggered into the street, crying out for assistance. Mr McKenna stated that “extensive efforts” were undertaken to preserve Mr Jenkins’ life, but he ultimately succumbed at the location. Mark Stewart KC, representing the defense, indicated that a financial disagreement had transpired, which subsequently “spilled into violence.” He further noted that the event was “clearly not a one-sided incident,” though self-defense could not be presented as justification for the subsequent actions. When delivering the sentence at the High Court in Edinburgh, Lord Fairley addressed Whelan, stating: “Given the seriousness of this offence to which you pleaded guilty to, it is clear that only a substantial custodial sentence is appropriate in the circumstances.” He continued: “I have read the victim impact statement provided to the court by Mr Jenkins’ father. The extent of his pain and suffering is clear for all to see.” Lord Fairley added: “He says losing his son in the way that he did is excruciating.” In a tribute issued at the time of his passing, Mr Jenkins’ family remarked: “Life wasn’t always kind to you Mike, but you showed the world a lot of kindness.” They concluded: “We all love you.” Copyright 2024 BBC.
