A man who was Tasered by police after fatally stabbing another individual has received a life sentence. Gary Hindle, whom his family characterized as a “much-loved” father, succumbed to his injuries at the location in Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex, on July 18. Barry Mooney pleaded guilty to murder and to causing grievous bodily harm with intent at Basildon Crown Court on Thursday. The 55-year-old defendant, residing at Crowstone Road, Westcliff, was mandated to serve a minimum custodial period of 26 years. According to Essex Police, surveillance footage indicated that the two individuals engaged in a brief exchange, “possibly an argument,” on a bench in Hamlet Court Road around 18:00 BST. Mooney then proceeded to a nearby tree and “got out a large knife” before assaulting 53-year-old Mr Hindle, as reported by the police force. Subsequently, Mooney assaulted another man who was walking along the road, resulting in the victim being transported to a hospital with life-threatening facial injuries. Investigators stated that Mooney remained seated at the location and required Taser deployment by officers after he declined to relinquish the knife. While in police custody, he issued threats against officers and confessed to perpetrating the assault, according to the force. In a collective statement, Mr Hindle’s family expressed: “We are all shocked and devastated by the loss of our much-loved son, dad, brother and partner.” They added: “Gary was one of a kind and had a heart of gold.” The statement concluded: “He touched so many lives and will be greatly missed by the many people who loved him dearly.” Detective Inspector Lisa Hurrell, who headed the inquiry, commented: “This was an horrific, unprovoked attack that has had the most tragic of consequences.” Prosecutors opted not to pursue charges of attempted murder, pertaining to the second victim, nor possession of a bladed or pointed article. These offenses will instead be recorded on file. Post navigation Grievance panel chair initially viewed Letby accusations as ‘witch-hunt’ Trial for 2013 Murder of Woman to Start 12 Years Later
