An individual received a 12-year prison sentence for subjecting a vulnerable young girl to prolonged sexual abuse over several years. David Fish, aged 47, committed acts of rape, caused physical harm, and compelled the girl to participate in sexually explicit videos during a three-year period from 2007 to 2010. His charges and subsequent prosecution were carried out as part of the National Crime Agency’s (NCA) Operation Stovewood, an initiative focused on investigating historical claims of sexual abuse within Rotherham. Fish, residing on Russell Road in Rotherham, received his sentence at Sheffield Crown Court. This followed his guilty plea to two sexual offences and convictions for additional charges, specifically rape, unlawful wounding, and causing or inciting child prostitution. Steve Palmer, representing the NCA, stated: “Though the victim will always live with what Fish did, I hope his sentencing will bring her a measure of peace and allow her to move forward.” Testimony presented in court indicated that Fish, then in his 20s, initiated the grooming of the girl when she was 15 years old and under the care system. He provided her with alcohol and illicit substances prior to sexually abusing her and capturing indecent images and videos. These materials were subsequently discovered on his computer, despite his denials of their presence. The victim recounted instances of Fish becoming violent, including one incident where he struck her head with a mug, necessitating stitches. Jeanette Smith, a specialist prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service, commented that the “cruel” abuse endured by the victim “can cause lifelong physical and emotional trauma”. She further stated: “Fish used gifts, drugs and alcohol to groom, coerce and manipulate a child into entering a relationship with him, all for his own sexual gratification.” Smith added: “The way he used threats and violence to then control the victim and enforce his demands for sex was completely despicable.” Operation Stovewood stands as the largest investigation of its type, focusing on allegations of abuse in Rotherham spanning the years 1997 to 2013. According to a spokesperson, NCA officers have identified over 1,100 victims, and 37 individuals have been convicted as of the current date.
