Man Sentenced After Cannabis Found in Trousers

Neil Clarke, aged 20, has received a sentence after being apprehended with nine wraps of cannabis concealed within his trousers. Law enforcement officers observed him behaving suspiciously and “shaking” before stopping him on 1 June in a back lane situated near Bucks Road in Douglas. During proceedings at Douglas Courthouse, it was disclosed that officers discovered the cannabis, valued at £168, during a search conducted after they detected a strong odor of the substance emanating from him. Deemster Graeme Cook imposed a suspended prison sentence, remarking that Clarke was a “young man who has clearly lost his way” yet was “not without hope of getting back onto the right path”. The court was informed that upon being searched by police, Clarke stated the drug was “literally just for personal use”. However, he subsequently asserted that he had been instructed to collect the cannabis by an unnamed individual, whom he declined to identify, and that he had been apprehensive about refusing. Prosecutors contended that the quantity of wraps indicated an intention to supply. It was also revealed in court that Clarke was serving a probation period for a comparable drugs offense at the time of his arrest. Deemster Cook stated that although he would not take action regarding the probation breach, it was regarded as an aggravating factor during sentencing. The deemster cautioned Clarke that cannabis itself could be “addictive and lead to all sorts of problems” and that it “may result in you thinking that it’s not enough,” potentially leading to the consumption of “harder” drugs. Deemster Cook further commented that as a “young man who does need some help,” Clarke would gain from supervision. Clarke received a sentence of six months in prison, which was suspended for a period of two years, accompanied by a supervision order for an equivalent duration.
