A Chinese court has imposed a suspended death sentence on an individual who injured more than a dozen children by driving his vehicle into a crowd outside a primary school in central China. The incident, which occurred in Changde City on November 19, resulted in injuries to 30 individuals, among them 18 schoolchildren. This marked the third crowd attack in China within a single week. Huang Wen’s suspended death sentence carries the possibility of being reduced to life imprisonment, provided he refrains from committing any further crimes over the subsequent two-year period. Nevertheless, the court’s decision drew online criticism, as some social media users alleged that the court had shown leniency towards Huang. The court stated that Huang committed the attack as a means to express his anger, following experiences with investment losses and family disputes. This sentencing revealed, for the first time, the precise number of injuries sustained in the Changde City incident. Numerous social media posts concerning the event have since been removed. Only days earlier, a man, reportedly dissatisfied with his divorce settlement, drove his vehicle into a crowd in Zhuhai, resulting in the deaths of 35 individuals. Certain observers have characterized these types of attacks as acts of societal vengeance. Conversely, others suggest that these occurrences highlight the suppressed frustrations some individuals feel regarding China’s economy. Regarding Huang, a Weibo user questioned, “Why does he deserve a suspension?” Another user remarked, “Such vicious cases need to be dealt with seriously and swiftly for deterrence.” Immediately following the attack, circulating videos depicted children on the ground, others in a panicked flight, and an irate pedestrian striking Huang’s car with a snow shovel while he remained inside. The court stated that Huang’s conduct at the time indicated the “extremely severe criminal circumstances” of his situation. Additionally, Huang’s sentence included the lifelong deprivation of his political rights. Copyright 2024 BBC. All rights reserved.
