A man who used a hammer to smash windows at a Nationwide Building Society branch has been given a 19-month prison sentence. Darren Wyer, 43, of no fixed abode, was discovered seated on a bench in Long Causeway, Peterborough, on October 13, following reports of an individual with a hammer in the vicinity. Surveillance footage showed Wyer striking the building society’s windows twice with a hammer, causing them to crack, before he returned 30 minutes later to hit the windows an additional three times. Wyer was sentenced at Cambridge Crown Court on December 9 after admitting to charges of threatening and abusive behaviour, common assault, destroying or damaging property, and breaching a suspended sentence. Police officials stated that this was not the first instance they had been called to incidents involving Wyer during that particular weekend. On October 12, he reportedly threw a duffel bag at his brother’s van windscreen and struck the driver’s window with a hammer. He also threw a lit cigarette at his brother and shouted abuse while throwing the hammer at his brother’s residence. The court was informed that Wyer had also previously intimidated his mother by sending abusive emails and text messages. PC Danielle Hunt commented: “Wyer had been given a second chance by the courts through an earlier suspended sentence for possession of an offensive weapon and criminal damage, which he completely disregarded with his recent actions.” She further added: “His continual aggression and harassment of his family has impacted upon their lives as well as his.” Information regarding Peterborough news is available on BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram, and X.
