An individual has admitted guilt to rioting charges, having kicked police officers and thrown bricks during a period of unrest. John Kirtley was observed on 2 August in Sunderland, holding a blue flare and yelling “England ‘til I die,” while he threw a beer keg towards officers who were positioned to guard a mosque. The 26-year-old, residing on Rutherglen Road in the city, entered a guilty plea to riot when he appeared before Newcastle Crown Court. Kirtley, who had previously confessed to violent disorder, is scheduled for sentencing on 31 January.
