An individual has confessed to igniting a series of blazes throughout a city. Anthony Reed-Metcalfe, aged 32, entered a guilty plea to three charges of arson, demonstrating recklessness regarding the potential endangerment of life, in addition to one charge of burglary, during his appearance at Gloucester Crown Court on Tuesday. Reed-Metcalfe faced charges concerning three fires that commenced on 29 September. Detective Constable Tom Newrick stated: “Reed-Metcalfe acted in a dangerous and irresponsible manner, potentially putting people’s lives at serious risk through his actions.” Law enforcement was summoned following a report of a structure ablaze on Southgate Street during the early morning hours of 29 September, according to court proceedings. While fire personnel were securing the initial building, an additional fire was observed within a neighboring structure. Both structures were vacant retail premises featuring residential units situated above them, necessitating the evacuation of residents. Shortly thereafter, authorities received multiple calls reporting substantial bin fires at various locations across the city. Testimony presented in court indicated that a suspect was observed in the car park of Gloucester railway station. As officers conducted a search of the vicinity, they detected the sound of breaking glass originating from The Station Hotel. Reed-Metcalfe was seen exiting through a shattered window, subsequently arrested on suspicion of arson, and confessed to initiating a fire within that building. He asserted that he had been exploring and had ignited a mattress and paper. Firefighters successfully contained the conflagration, located on the building’s first floor, though the resulting damage was described as “catastrophic.” Reed-Metcalfe, whose address is Eastern Avenue, has been held in custody pending his sentencing, scheduled for 18 November.
