James Critchley, a 31-year-old man from Wesham, Lancashire, has received a prison sentence exceeding seven years. This follows his conviction for raping a woman in her residence and subsequently sending her an apology message a week after the incident. Preston Crown Court was informed that Critchley committed the rape in the woman’s home during the early hours of 28 January 2021. According to Lancashire Police, “A week later, he messaged her, to apologise for what he had done.” Crithcley, whose address was given as Meadow Park, had pleaded not guilty to the rape charge. He received a sentence of seven years and eight months in prison, in addition to an indefinite restraining order that prohibits him from making contact with the woman. Following the sentencing, Detective Constable Stu Kane issued a statement, saying: “Critchley’s victim has shown incredible bravery throughout this process, despite the effect his despicable actions has undoubtedly had on her.” He added, “I absolutely commend her for the strength she has shown.” Det Con Kane further commented on the incident, stating, “Critchley’s actions that morning were nothing short of abhorrent – he attacked his victim in her own home – the place that she should have felt the safest.” He concluded by saying, “I welcome the sentence handed down on him this week, which reflects the severity of his offence.” For more content, listeners can access the best of BBC Radio Lancashire on Sounds and connect with BBC Lancashire on platforms such as Facebook, X, and Instagram.
