An individual has been incarcerated for a period of six years, alongside an additional three years to be served on licence, following a single punch assault that resulted in another man’s fatality. Benjamin Grosvenor, aged 28, became the victim of an assault on Trinity Street in Stoke-on-Trent during the early morning hours of November 28, 2021. He suffered severe head trauma from the incident and subsequently passed away at a hospital on November 26, 2023. Benjamin Wallbanks, 41 years old and hailing from Fenton, admitted his guilt to a charge of manslaughter in September. His sentencing took place at Stafford Crown Court on Friday. According to police statements, before the assault, the victim had been out for the evening with his brother and sister and was proceeding to obtain food when he became embroiled in a dispute. Wallbanks intervened in the confrontation and delivered a single punch to Mr. Grosvenor’s head, rendering him unconscious. The assault resulted in the victim suffering a brain hemorrhage, and he succumbed to his injuries almost two years subsequent to the incident. Staffordshire Police indicated that the two individuals were not acquainted with each other. In a statement of remembrance, Mr. Grosvenor’s family described him as a kind individual and expressed their profound devastation over his passing. They stated: “He was one of life’s good guys and he didn’t deserve to have his life so cruelly taken away from him.” The family added: “Ben suffered for two long years in a coma before losing his life. He didn’t deserve to suffer in this way, and nothing will ever alleviate the pain we feel from losing our Ben.” Detective Inspector Adrian Webb of Staffordshire Police commented that the family has endured “immeasurably” since the occurrence. He remarked: “A single punch, wielded by Wallbanks has had devastating and fatal consequences.” He further expressed: “I hope that Wallbanks’ conviction and prison sentence bring some closure to friends and family of Benjamin as they continue to come to terms with their tragic loss.” Updates from BBC Stoke & Staffordshire can be accessed via BBC Sounds, Facebook, X, and Instagram.
