Video evidence has been made public showing a driver under the influence of alcohol shortly after he caused a fatal collision in Deal. Jack Nixon, aged 27, had consumed alcohol in Canterbury throughout the night prior to driving home and offering a ride to three individuals. The footage, which captures Nixon undergoing a police breathalyser test, records him stating: “I don’t even care about other people, I just want to go bed.” Nixon, residing at Cannon Street, Deal, pleaded guilty at Canterbury Crown Court to charges of causing death by driving while exceeding the prescribed limit, causing death by driving while unlicensed, and causing serious injury by careless driving. On 7 November 2024, he received a sentence of nine years and six months in prison. On 9 October 2022, with three occupants in his vehicle, Nixon collided with a railway bridge on Cornwall Road in Deal. The incident resulted in the death of one man, aged 21, and injuries to the other two passengers. According to Kent Police, Nixon possessed only a provisional driving license and lacked valid insurance or an MOT certificate. A breath test indicated Nixon’s alcohol level was 58mg per 100ml of breath, exceeding the legal limit of 35mg. Furthermore, a drugs test detected cannabis in his system, and Kent Police reported discovering a bag containing cannabis and ketamine within the vehicle. Following his release from incarceration, he will face a seven-year disqualification from driving. Det Con Kayleigh Archer, the investigating officer, commented that Nixon’s conduct on that evening led to “far-reaching, tragic repercussions for all involved, as well as their families and friends”.
