An individual involved in drug smuggling has received a two-year prison sentence after being apprehended at an airport with 25kg (4st) of cannabis concealed in his luggage. Ivan Dyer was intercepted by customs officials at Newcastle International Airport around 10:30 GMT on November 10. He had arrived after journeys originating from Thailand, China, and Singapore, as revealed during proceedings at Newcastle Crown Court. During the court hearing, it was stated that Dyer asserted he was importing the illicit substance to acquire £8,000 for an engagement ring. Dyer, who resides in Sheldon, Birmingham, pleaded guilty to charges related to involvement in the importation of a Class B drug. Prosecutor Michael Bunch stated that the 43-year-old, who possesses prior convictions for drug supply, robbery, and a “taxing” raid on a rival-operated illegal cannabis farm, had arrived in Newcastle from Paris. He informed customs officers that his travels included Bangkok and Singapore, with a luggage label indicating a visit to Shanghai as well, according to court proceedings. Dyer, whose address is Garretts Green Lane, was found with two suitcases. Both were subjected to scanning, revealing a total of 50 packages, each containing 500g (1lb) of cannabis. Mr Bunch reported that as his bags were being inspected, Dyer displayed visible distress and informed officers he was acquiring funds to purchase an engagement ring. In mitigation, the court was informed of Dyer’s “naivety,” noting that the eight-day journey marked his initial trip outside Europe, and he had been assured there would be no customs officers present at Newcastle Airport. Recorder Alistair MacDonald KC stated that Dyer “knew exactly what [he was] doing” and possessed “significant awareness” of his involvement in a “substantial” illegal operation. “You took a risk, you’ve been caught,” the judge remarked.
