An individual has been handed a life imprisonment sentence for the murder of a shopping centre employee, whose body, bearing multiple stab wounds, was discovered inside a vehicle within the facility’s car park. Vasile Gorghescu inflicted 27 stab wounds upon Chaudhary Mahmood. Mr. Mahmood’s remains were located outside the Stratford Centre in east London on 9 January. Gorghescu, aged 42, residing at Rayner Gardens, Southampton, received a minimum custodial term of 31 years and 39 days at Snaresbrook Crown Court on 3 December. Detective Chief Inspector Joanna Yorke, who headed the inquiry, stated that Mr. Mahmood, 45, had proceeded to the car park with the belief he was purchasing mobile phones from Gorghescu. Gorghescu, however, planned to defraud his victim and committed the murder once his deceptive scheme was uncovered. Det Ch Insp Yorke commented: “Vasile Gorghescu drove to meet Chaudhary Mahmood armed with a weapon and clearly with the intention of resorting to violence should his fraudulent plan be uncovered.” She added that Mr. Mahmood became aware he was being defrauded but was “defenceless in the face of Gorghescu’s attack”. “This has been an incredibly distressing time for Chaudhary’s family and nothing will ever erase the pain of their loss,” the detective remarked. “Throughout this process, Gorghescu has attempted to deflect blame away from himself, claiming he acted in self-defence and that he also could not remember what happened.” The court, however, saw through these lies, and he has rightly been held to account for his actions.
