A man has been incarcerated after inflicting fatal injuries on another individual by throwing a metal chair at his head during a dispute. Rashko Kurtev, aged 32, threw a chair at Rodney Macleod on March 9, outside the Seabells Fish and Chip shop located in Birchington, Kent. Mr. Macleod sustained severe head injuries from the chair impact, leading to his death in hospital on April 15. On Friday, Kurtev received a sentence of three years and nine months in prison at Canterbury Crown Court, having pleaded guilty to a manslaughter charge. Eyewitnesses to the assault reported that Mr. Macleod and employees from the Station Road restaurant had become involved in an argument. Kent Police stated that Kurtev, an employee at the restaurant, emerged outside during the altercation and threw some of the victim’s possessions at him. Subsequently, he threw two metal chairs at Mr. Macleod, with the second chair striking the side of his head. Kurtev, residing at Park Avenue, Birchington, was apprehended and charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent following Mr. Macleod’s hospitalization due to severe injuries. Nevertheless, Mr. Macleod’s condition did not improve, and he passed away in hospital. A post-mortem examination identified his traumatic brain injury as one of the contributing factors to his demise. Detective Inspector Colin McKeen commented that the case illustrates the “catastrophic consequences of people turning to violence during disagreements”. He further stated, “One man has lost his life and another is in jail following an argument which this offender could just have walked away from. The use of a metal chair as a weapon was completely unnecessary.” For updates, follow BBC Kent on Facebook, X, and Instagram.
