An individual received a prison sentence following a “shocking” attempt to commit armed robbery at a supermarket, during which he brandished a knife and attempted to injure employees and shoppers. Proceedings at Plymouth Crown Court revealed that Logan Hendry, 24, described as being of no fixed abode and wearing a hood, menaced a female employee at a checkout counter within the Lidl store located in Woolwell, Plymouth. The employee declined his demand for money and sought assistance, leading to a subsequent struggle where Hendry assaulted staff members and a customer, resulting in an injury to the latter. Hendry pleaded guilty to charges including attempted robbery, threatening an individual with a bladed weapon, unauthorized vehicle taking, and several driving infractions, receiving a three-year prison sentence. Testimony presented in court indicated that Hendry entered the supermarket around 12:10 GMT on August 16. He then covered his face with a balaclava before menacing a woman at the checkout. Following her refusal to hand over money, he proceeded to threaten a male employee and a female shopper. A male customer retrieved a battery recycling container and, alongside an employee, forced Hendry out of the store as he attempted to slash and kick them with the knife. The male customer suffered a minor cut to his arm before Hendry escaped. Hendry’s arrest occurred after law enforcement officers observed him driving in the direction of Yelverton, according to information presented to the court. Detective Constable Sabrina Turner of Devon and Cornwall Police, who headed the inquiry, commented post-case: “This was a shocking incident that occurred in a busy store in the middle of the day.” She extended gratitude to the employees and the public “for their bravery in intervening and assisting in removing the defendant from the store”. “Although we would not normally encourage people to intervene, it is only right we recognise they have selflessly put themselves in a dangerous situation to protect others,” she stated.
