A male individual has been found guilty of assaulting a woman and subsequently raping her on a public thoroughfare. Jonathon Newby, aged 34, of Gypsey Road, Bridlington, pursued the victim as she was returning to her residence after an evening outing on 19 March. He then assailed her from behind with a bladed implement and committed rape within a wooded section of the Bessingby Industrial Estate, prior to his departure from the location. Newby had pleaded not guilty to three counts of rape, threatening with an offensive weapon, possessing a weapon with the intent to commit a sexual offence, and unlawful wounding. However, he was found culpable on all charges at Grimsby Crown Court following a nine-day trial that concluded recently. Subsequent to the incident, the victim reported the matter to two police officers conducting a high-visibility patrol in the vicinity of Ramsey Road. Newby was then located proceeding towards Bessingby Road, where he was apprehended. Charges for the offences were formally brought against him three days thereafter. Detective Constable Ethan Anderson stated: “I cannot begin to put into words the bravery and courage the woman has shown throughout the investigation and court proceedings, and I want to offer my sincerest thanks and praise as she has helped take an evil man off our streets.” He further described Newby as a sexual predator who inflicted a horrific and utterly traumatising ordeal upon a woman to satisfy his own perverse needs. Anderson added that by declining to acknowledge his despicable crimes, Newby compelled the victim to endure additional torment by reliving the ordeal during the trial. He expressed hope that the verdict would provide her with a measure of justice. Newby has been held in custody pending his sentencing at Grimsby Crown Court, scheduled for 3 February.
