Ronald Whelan, who was convicted of injuring another railway passenger, is facing extradition to France in connection with an alleged plot involving 100kg (220 lbs) of Colombian cocaine. On 2 August, at Blundellsands and Crosby Station, Muhammed Uddin sustained a hand injury while attempting to seize a pocket knife wielded by Whelan. The dispute between the two men began aboard a Merseyrail train and escalated at the station, where the 57-year-old Whelan subsequently lunged at Mr. Uddin’s abdomen with the knife. During proceedings at Liverpool Crown Court, it was revealed that Whelan’s subsequent apprehension led to him being identified by the National Crime Agency, which then discovered he was sought by authorities in France. Whelan, whose address was not fixed, admitted guilt to charges of unlawful wounding and possessing a bladed article. He received a 15-month prison sentence, which was suspended for 18 months. Prosecutor Philip Clemo stated that a young woman, along with her two children, had secured themselves inside a waiting room at the station during the confrontation. He further remarked, “The incident took place in the shadow of the recent Southport killings and she was distressed.” According to Mr. Clemo, the woman proceeded to assist Mr. Uddin after Whelan departed in “rather a casual manner.” Whelan was apprehended five days subsequent to the event, as he was entering a gym. During a police interview, he confessed to his participation. Recorder Ben Douglas-Jones, the presiding judge, noted that Whelan had avoided legal issues for 41 years, commenting that it was “sad to see him back before the court.” Louise Santamera, representing Whelan, conveyed that her client acknowledged he had “wholly misjudged the situation” and described it as the “worst mistake he’s made.” Whelan received an order to complete 150 hours of unpaid community work and 25 days of rehabilitation activities under the supervision of the Probation Service. Mr. Clemo stated that Whelan was “a wanted man in France in relation to the importation of over 100 kilos of high purity cocaine from Colombia.” Ms. Santamera informed the court that, “As far as the Interpol warrant is concerned he is unable to assist the court as he doesn’t know anything about it.” Whelan is scheduled to appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court for a hearing regarding his extradition.
