An individual has been formally charged subsequent to a reported sexual assault that occurred in Londonderry’s Lecky Road vicinity on Sunday. The 32-year-old male faces accusations of sexual assault by penetration and grievous bodily harm. His court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday at Londonderry Magistrates’ Court. The victim, a woman in her fifties, sustained severe facial injuries during the attack. Law enforcement officials stated that an unidentified man approached her in the early hours of Sunday morning, forcibly drawing her into an adjacent alleyway. There, he sexually assaulted her, repeatedly struck her face, and forcibly hit her head against a wall. The woman’s injuries necessitated hospital care. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) commented: “She sustained serious facial and other injuries as a result of this terrifying ordeal that she was only able to escape from after her attacker let her go.” “The woman was able to then raise the alarm for help, and the suspect fled the scene on foot.” Authorities have appealed to anyone who was present in the vicinity at the time of the occurrence to make contact.
