A man aged 49 has been convicted of attempting to arrange a meeting with a teenage girl for sexual purposes. Upon his arrest on June 28, Giles Croucher, residing at Grove Lane, Ipswich, was found to have three white-lace thongs, 10 condoms, and two mobile phones in his vehicle by arresting officers. During proceedings at Ipswich Crown Court, it was revealed that Croucher asserted he was en route to “catch out” and “confront” undercover police officers, who had been impersonating a teenager through online communication. Nevertheless, a jury rendered a guilty verdict for attempting to engage a child in sexual communication and attempting to cause or incite a 14-year-old girl to participate in sexual activity. The trial of Croucher included testimony detailing his contact with an online account, the user of which purported to be a 14-year-old girl but was, in fact, an undercover police officer. Croucher provided a pre-prepared statement during an interview, which was subsequently presented in court. Within this statement, he declared his awareness of communicating with an “undercover officer” and denied seeking sexual contact. Croucher further stated: “I went to meet them to confirm my suspicions, catch them out and confront them.” He affirmed: “I had no intention to engage in any form of sexual activity.” Croucher’s sentencing is scheduled for March 7, 2025.
