A rapidly spreading wildfire has led to evacuation orders for thousands of residents in Malibu, a wealthy enclave situated near Los Angeles. Among those directed to leave their homes are actors Dick Van Dyke and Mark Hamill, and musician Cher, as the blaze consumed acres of land. The Franklin Fire, which ignited late on Monday in Malibu Canyon, has prompted the deployment of hundreds of personnel to combat its spread after it destroyed several residences. No injuries have been reported. As of Wednesday, the fire had expanded but was 20% contained. The origin of the blaze remains unknown, though the area had been under a red-flag warning, indicating conditions conducive to severe fires. Officials’ most recent data indicates that over 4,000 acres of land have been consumed by the fire. Approximately 2,000 firefighters are engaged in battling the flames, which have advanced into challenging steep terrain, hindering access for crews. Governor Gavin Newsom confirmed that a significant portion of the city is under a mandatory evacuation order and federal aid has been provided. Smoke advisories have been issued for adjacent regions, recommending that individuals restrict or forgo outdoor activities. The fire has left behind a path of incinerated vehicles, including cars and buses, alongside the scorched remnants of residences. Authorities reported that nine structures, four of which were homes, have been destroyed. Malibu is a favored location for celebrities. Residences belonging to notable figures such as Lady Gaga, Beyonce, and Jay Z were reportedly within the designated evacuation area. Van Dyke confirmed on Facebook that he was among the celebrities compelled to evacuate. The “Mary Poppins” actor, who will celebrate his 99th birthday on Friday, stated that he and his wife, Arlene, safely departed with their pets, with the exception of their cat, Bobo, who was missing for several hours. “We found Bobo as soon as we arrived back home this morning,” Van Dyke posted on Facebook. “There was so much interest in his disappearance that Animal Control was called in to assist. But, thankfully, he was easy to find and not harmed.” According to witnesses who spoke to KABC-TV, the house next to Van Dyke’s caught fire, but his own property remained undamaged. The New York Times reported that singer Cher also had to evacuate due to the fire. A representative informed Fox that she had not yet returned to her residence. Barbra Streisand, another well-known Malibu resident, had her publicist tell the New York Times that it was uncertain if she had evacuated. Mark Hamill, the “Star Wars” actor, informed his Instagram followers that he was “in lockdown” due to the fires and was staying at his home. He wrote, “I’m not allowed to leave the house, which fits in with my elderly-recluse lifestyle.” Other public figures who verified their impact by the fire included former “Dancing with the Stars” champion and television personality Brook Burke, British actress Jane Seymour, and Academy Award winner Mira Sorvino. In California, wildfires typically have the potential to incinerate tens of thousands of acres of vegetation, a consequence of the region’s characteristic dry conditions. The Franklin Fire, while spreading rapidly, is considered comparatively small. Area schools have been closed, roads are inaccessible, and local power has been disconnected as a precautionary measure to prevent the fire from escalating. According to the tracking website Poweroutage.us, tens of thousands of homes experienced power outages on Wednesday morning, with most reconnected by Thursday afternoon. Concurrently, evacuation centers have been established for both residents and animals. Data from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) indicated that over 5,000 individuals were within the evacuation zone. The fire originated in the vicinity of Pepperdine University. The university initially instructed students to shelter in place but has since rescinded that directive, stating that nearby fire activity had “greatly diminished.” Video evidence depicted students taking refuge in the university library on Monday evening as a fire front approached. Fire crews actively sprayed water on the flames. Pepperdine reported minimal damage to its campus, with no injuries sustained. Officials have cautioned that the seasonal Santa Ana winds have intensified this blaze. It began approximately three miles (4.8km) north of the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), a renowned road along the Pacific Ocean celebrated for its scenic vistas, and rapidly advanced southward, crossing the highway into the Malibu Pier area. The County of Los Angeles Fire Department specified that the evacuation order encompassed a zone including areas east of Malibu Canyon Road, south of Puma Road, and the Serra Retreat area. A map of the fire’s progression illustrates its proximity to city hall government buildings, a school, and numerous residences in the vicinity, including a stretch of oceanfront properties. This recent event follows approximately one month after a separate fire necessitated the evacuation of thousands of individuals from Moorpark, another nearby city. California is a state susceptible to wildfires. The acreage burned during summer months in the northern and central regions of the state saw a fivefold increase between 1996 and 2021, when compared to the preceding 24-year timeframe. Scientists have linked this trend to climate change, although not every wildfire can be directly attributed to this factor. The scientific understanding is complex, with human elements, such as land and forest management practices, also playing a role. Nevertheless, scientists assert that climate change is increasing the probability of weather conditions, like heat and drought, that foster wildfires.
