Swansea City’s head coach, Luke Williams, has stated that the team can contend for a Championship play-off spot this season if they maintain their current level of performance throughout the remainder of the campaign. Swansea concluded the previous Championship season in 14th place, having last reached the play-offs in the 2020-21 season. The team is set to host Sunderland on Saturday, following a run of form that has seen them secure eight points from their last four matches. Over their last 10 fixtures, Swansea has suffered three defeats, all of which were considered somewhat unfortunate due to being conceded by last-minute goals. Williams noted that Swansea is currently experiencing its most consistent period of form since he assumed leadership 11 months ago. His squad is presently five points behind the top six as the 2024-25 season approaches its halfway mark. The Swansea head coach remarked, “If we are really serious about trying to get into a play-off position and staying there until the end of the season, the challenge is there in front of us.” He elaborated, “[That is] to maintain our level of performance and to get the results when we have created enough [chances] and denied enough [opposition chances]. If we can do that in the way we have demonstrated recently, then I am sure we are going to end up in those play-offs.” Following a summer transfer window that resulted in squad vacancies and the arrival of several inexperienced players, Williams had previously deemed it “silly” to suggest his team could compete “at the very peak” of the second tier. By November, he had indicated that a top-10 finish should be the minimum objective. Williams now expresses that each victory achieved by his team contributes to a growing sense of optimism within the club, with expectations that Swansea’s squad will be further strengthened during the January transfer window. He commented, “I think it’s fair to say that a number of players signed in the summer have made steady progress.” Williams added, “I am hoping they will continue to improve their performances and that goes hand in hand with developing strong relationships with their team-mates. I think that’s going to help us. Then we have the possibility that we bring players to join that group who have a very high level as well.” A midweek win against Plymouth means Swansea will aim to extend their unbeaten streak to five games – a milestone not yet achieved under Williams’ management – when they face high-flying Sunderland. The former Notts County boss, Williams, stated, “That would be nice… 10 games unbeaten would be nice.” He continued, “I have been fortunate enough to go through some long runs without losing in my previous role. It’s a great feeling and one I would love to replicate here.” For the upcoming match against Sunderland, Swansea reports no new fitness concerns. However, the team will still be without Joe Allen, who is anticipated to be sidelined for approximately three weeks, as well as Andy Fisher, Sam Parker, Josh Ginnelly, and Ollie Cooper.
