Artworks by LS Lowry, which portray Cumbrian landscapes, are scheduled for auction, with individual pieces estimated to fetch up to £40,000. Among the items being offered by Cockermouth-based Mitchells Auction this week is an oil painting from 1961, thought to illustrate Sir John Barrow’s monument situated on Hoad Hill in Ulverston. Additionally, a pencil drawing from 1960, titled “Maryport – The Estuary,” which depicts a scene of the west Cumbrian coastal town, is also slated for auction. The oil painting carries an estimated value ranging from £25,000 to £40,000, while the pencil drawing is anticipated to achieve a sale price between £25,000 and £35,000. Last month, two other paintings by Lowry were sold at auction, collectively fetching £1.8 million. Lowry, who passed away in 1976, is renowned for his depictions of working-class existence in towns throughout the North of England. The oil painting featuring the Ulverston scene was consigned for sale by the family of Graeme Bentham, to whom Lowry had presented it as a gift, along with several other pieces. Mr. Bentham, a resident of Ashton-under-Lyne, received instruction from Lowry after developing an interest in drawing and painting during the 1940s. The auction is scheduled to occur on 28 November.
