The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) announced Monday that Hannah Kobayashi, a 30-year-old woman from Hawaii reported missing by her family in Los Angeles last month, was observed by US authorities safely entering Mexico. Officials stated that video footage acquired by US immigration personnel showed Ms. Kobayashi crossing the southern US border on foot into Mexico shortly after arriving in Los Angeles from Hawaii and intentionally missing her subsequent flight to New York. During a news conference, officials indicated that the video depicted her as safe, and no foul play is currently suspected. They characterized her status as a “voluntarily missing person.” This update follows an extensive search initiated after her family reported receiving cryptic and unusual messages from her concerning alleged theft of her money and identity. LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell stated, “The investigation has not uncovered any evidence that Kobayashi is being trafficked or is the victim of foul play.” He further added, “She is also not a suspect in any criminal activity. Additionally, the investigators noted that before departing Maui, Kobayashi expressed the desire to step away from modern connectivity.” The chief concluded by saying, “We’ve basically done everything we can do at this point. She’s left the country and in another nation now.” Ms. Kobayashi’s disappearance dates back to November 8. She was observed in various locations across Los Angeles in the subsequent days, prior to her disappearance on November 12. According to The LA Times, her family disputes the police’s claim that she deliberately missed her connecting flight and remains worried about her well-being. Her sister, Sydni Kobayashi, conveyed in a statement cited by the Times, “The lack of communication surrounding some important details has left us feeling excluded from potentially crucial developments. However, we do remain hopeful and optimistic that the Los Angeles Police Department is doing everything in their power to assist us in locating Hannah.” On November 24, police reported that Ms. Kobayashi’s father, Ryan Kobayashi, 58, who had traveled to California to assist in the search, died by suicide near the Los Angeles airport. The LA coroner’s office confirmed he was found deceased due to multiple blunt force traumatic injuries.
