A wildlife trust has reported that a lorry was set on fire after individuals attempting a theft loaded equipment onto it, only for the vehicle to become immobilized in mud. The Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust confirmed a break-in occurred at its Volunteer Training Centre, located within the Rutland Water Nature Reserve, involving an effort to steal specialized machinery and equipment. The trust further stated that after the items were loaded, the heavily-laden vehicle became mired in mud within a wildflower meadow as the perpetrators attempted to escape. Subsequently, the lorry was torched, resulting in “extensive physical and environmental damage” estimated to exceed £40,000, according to the trust. Joe Davis, the head of reserves, commented: “This incident is a major setback to nature recovery efforts within our two counties.” He added that funds raised during their Reserves Appeal last year had contributed to the purchase of some of this equipment, rendering its loss particularly devastating. “We now face a huge clean-up bill, loss of essential equipment, and the postponement of many planned works,” Davis stated. A spokesperson for Leicestershire Police confirmed that an investigation is currently underway regarding the attempted thefts, which are thought to have taken place overnight from October 27 to October 28. The spokesperson stated: “A police investigation is ongoing after the attempted theft of two specialised pieces of equipment from a premises in Oakham Road, Oakham.” “It was reported to police after the items were discovered missing shortly before 9am on Monday 28 October,” they added. “A short time later they were found abandoned nearby burnt out,” the spokesperson continued. The force also noted that no arrests have been made to date. Mat Carter, CEO of the trust, expressed his sentiments, saying: “The trust is deeply saddened by this destructive act, which directly impacts the nature reserve, its operations, and the invaluable time and resources of our staff and volunteers.” He concluded: “We are committed to restoring the reserve and ensuring it remains a safe and welcoming place for all.”
