An HGV operator has been apprehended on suspicion of operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol. This action followed a report from a member of the public who observed a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) swerving erratically across the road. North Yorkshire Police indicated that officers were dispatched after receiving intelligence concerning the vehicle’s manner of driving on the A169 close to Malton, shortly before 22:30 GMT yesterday evening. The 40-year-old male driver initially declined to provide a breath sample at the scene and was subsequently taken into custody. He later furnished a breath sample which registered an alcohol level exceeding three times the legal threshold, leading to his detention, the force reported. Sgt James Jarman commented that this arrest was one of over 70 carried out since December 1st, as part of the force’s Christmas initiative against driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. He stated: “Drive drinking risks the lives of all road users – but to be driving an HGV whilst three times over the limit is incomprehensible.” Sgt Jarman also added: “I would like to thank the member of public for calling the police.”
