An individual baker has accumulated in excess of £130,000 for the veterans’ support organization Help For Heroes through operating cake stalls for a period spanning 15 years. David Brown, the baker, produces over one thousand cakes annually, which he then sells in Beccles, Suffolk. The 81-year-old commenced his baking efforts alongside his late wife, Patricia, following their daughter Sally’s return from Afghanistan in 2009, after Sally had completed 24 years of service in the Army. This month, Mr. Brown was presented with a certificate from Help for Heroes, acknowledging the contributions of “Lord and Lady Drizzle of Beccles.” Mr. Brown, who resides in Burgh St Peter, Norfolk, recounted that his “dear wife Pat” initially chose to set up a stall in their front garden in 2009, expressing astonishment upon realizing she had gathered £346 for charity in a single day. He stated, “I am extremely proud and honoured to do this to raise money for Help for Heroes.” He added, “Help for Heroes christened me Lord Drizzle and the name stuck.” He further explained, “When the latest certificates arrived, they also put Lord and Lady Drizzle on one of them because they’ve never forgotten that Pat started it all.” Since her passing in 2016, he has diligently upheld his wife’s charitable endeavor. In 2022, Mr. Brown received a nomination from the charity for a Pride of Britain Award, and in 2024, his voluntary contributions were recognized with a Prime Minister’s Points of Light award. Help For Heroes’ mission involves the rehabilitation of injured veterans, offering them training for new professional paths and assisting with their mental well-being. Dean Williams, the charity’s area fundraising manager, commented, “David is an extraordinary individual and is an inspiration, not just to other fundraisers, but to me and all my colleagues at the charity.” Williams added, “He’s something of a legend among the staff.” Mr. Williams concluded by saying, “What’s more, his cakes are delicious. Pat taught him well.” Post navigation New Rural Food Hub Opens in Leicestershire Village to Assist Residents Thai Chef’s Dream Realized with New Peterborough City Centre Restaurant
