Police have reported that a woman in her 50s sustained serious facial injuries following a sexual assault in Londonderry. The incident occurred on Sunday during the early hours on Lecky Road. A man in his 30s has been apprehended on suspicion of offences connected to the incident and is currently being held in police custody. An unknown male reportedly approached the woman, forcibly pulling her into an adjacent alleyway. There, he sexually assaulted her, struck her face multiple times, and repeatedly hit her head against a wall. Her injuries necessitated hospital treatment. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) issued a statement, saying: “She sustained serious facial and other injuries as a result of this terrifying ordeal that she was only able to escape from after her attacker let her go.” The PSNI further stated: “The woman was able to then raise the alarm for help, and the suspect fled the scene on foot.” Authorities have urged anyone present in the vicinity at the time of the event to come forward and contact them. SDLP MLA SinĂ©ad McLaughlin commented: “It was an absolutely horrific ordeal for that woman and my thoughts are with her and her family as she overcomes the physical assault, but also the emotional trauma that probably will never go away for her.” McLaughlin further added: “Women need to feel safe in our streets during the day and in the evening and this woman was just going about her own business.” Post navigation Three Teenagers Arrested After Supermarket Fight Report Edinburgh Retailers Express Safety Concerns Amid Violent Shoplifting Incidents
