This past weekend, one hundred volunteers utilized bicycles to navigate the streets of London, distributing donated provisions to individuals experiencing homelessness as Christmas approaches. Verral Paul Walcott, the founder of C86ERZ, orchestrated this cycling event, which forms part of an annual Christmas initiative aimed at assisting London’s homeless population. While Mr. Walcott regularly cycles throughout the capital year-round to deliver donated goods to those requiring assistance, this particular event offered an occasion for participants of all ages to collaborate and contribute to their local communities during the Christmas period. On Friday evening, the volunteer cyclists received donated Lime and Forest bicycles, while local businesses and schools provided food, gifts, and toiletries. Subsequently, the cycling teams dispersed to deliver supplies to various areas of London, generally returning to their residential neighborhoods to ensure familiarity with the routes and, ideally, with the rough sleepers in those vicinities. Seven-year-old Ben, a school friend of Mr. Walcott’s son Hudson, commented, “This only happens once a year… And everybody helps the homeless. They go on a big bike ride around the city.” Ted, Ben’s twin brother, stated, “I have everything I need but other people don’t. Some people, they need things, they need help, that’s why I’m here today.” Mr. Walcott explained that the Christmas cycling event enables teams to cover a greater area than they could on foot and access locations inaccessible by car. He further noted, “With a bike you can go to various locations very fast or even change location based on when you’ve been notified when someone needs help.” Local businesses and additional campaigners were also present to provide assistance, among them Mitch Winehouse, father of the late singer Amy Winehouse. He established the Amy Winehouse Foundation over 10 years ago, an organization dedicated to supporting homeless young individuals. Mr. Winehouse remarked, “When we started the foundation which was just after Amy passed away in 2011 one of the first things that we looked at was homelessness.” He recounted, “Before Amy passed away, she took a homeless person off the street and she looked after her for six months, which is an incredible thing to do really.” He mentioned that he had questioned his daughter at the time, asking “what on earth do you think you’re doing.” Mr. Winehouse further stated, “She said don’t worry about it dad I’m looking after her and she’s going to be alright.” Prezidential Flavas, a local restaurant, provided all the hot meals for the evening, distributing them to individuals residing in tents and hostels throughout the capital. Teon Hammond, the owner, commented, “We’ve made jerk chicken and white rice.” He added, “I’ve always been a man of my community, and I’ve always been about giving back, that’s why I’m out here.” According to recent data, the population of individuals sleeping rough in London has increased by nearly one-fifth. The most recent statistics from the Combined Homelessness and Information Network (Chain) indicate that a total of 4,780 rough sleepers were observed on the streets of the capital between July and September.
