Liverpool manager Arne Slot appeared composed, thoughtful, and somewhat cheerful during his media address on Friday, ahead of his team’s match against Aston Villa on Saturday. His disposition is understandable given that his squad currently leads both the Premier League and their Champions League group stage, which is operating under its new format, marking a strong start to the season for the Dutch coach. Slot attributed the team’s achievements thus far to the quality and diligent work of the players, who have met his demands, resulting in 14 victories from their initial 16 games. While there may be considerable discussion outside the Anfield club regarding their prospects for the season, this topic is not addressed within the internal discussions of the Reds. “I’m not trying to manage expectations with the squad because we don’t talk about expectations,” Slot stated. “The only expectations I have is that they put the same effort in on a daily basis like they’ve done for the last few months, and probably for the past six or seven years. That’s the only thing we focus on.” Slot responded with a laugh when questioned about the contract situations of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah, and Virgil van Dijk, whose current agreements are set to conclude in the summer. Inquiries about the trio’s futures have become commonplace, and Slot has demonstrated considerable skill in handling them. “In general, contract situations are talked about by the people who should talk about it,” he commented. “I’m one of them but I should not talk about this in public. I do talk about this with [sporting director] Richard [Hughes]. That’s the place that we have to talk about it and not in front of a microphone.”
