Gas company Cadent has reported that Liverpool recorded the highest number of confirmed gas thefts in the north-west of England over the past year. Gas theft occurs when individuals illegally interfere with gas pipes and bypass gas meters. Data spanning from April 2023 to July 2024 indicated 269 confirmed gas thefts in Liverpool, in contrast to Manchester’s 179 during the same period. Dave Garner, Cadent’s director of safety, stated that gas thefts can lead to leaks, which could “go on to create a gas explosion which can have devastating consequences”. Mr Garner emphasized, “Meter tampering, interfering with your pipe work or interfering with your appliances can be really, really dangerous.” He further explained, “Gas theft is a situation where someone looks to take their gas for free and meter tampering is one way in which people do this.” Cadent disclosed that reports of gas theft have increased by 25% across England, Scotland, and Wales. The North West ranked as the third highest region in England for these incidents, with the West Midlands topping the list and London securing the second position. Gas engineer Asif Hussain noted that he is being called to a greater number of gas theft cases. He confirmed, “We have seen an increase.” Hussain added, “There has been reports where people will just literally rob your meter.” He elaborated, “When this does happen we are called out to safeguard life and property because it is dangerous.” While gas theft is not a new phenomenon, gas companies expressed concern regarding the recent rise. Mr Garner stated, “We have no hard evidence that links the increase in the numbers of cases to the cost of living situation that we’re all facing,”. He concluded, “But we are mindful that people are under pressure at the moment.” The Cadent Foundation has established a £2m emergency support fund and collaborates with charities to assist some of the most financially vulnerable households. Gas fraud is classified as a criminal offence, carrying a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a fine of up to £2000.
