The winter timetable for the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company is experiencing disruptions due to challenges encountered when berthing ships at the recently opened Liverpool ferry terminal. According to the nationalised ferry service, problems arose during recent berthing trials conducted with the Manxman and Ben My Chree. These trials, as stated by the company, “identified challenges to safely moor vessels at various tidal heights, particularly at the forward end of these vessels”. Consequently, adjustments to sailing times will be necessary from early November through to the end of December to guarantee the “safe and efficient delivery of operations”. The Steam Packet has indicated that it is collaborating with the Isle of Man Government’s Department of Infrastructure to seek “solutions to mitigate the impact of these challenges” at the new £70m terminal, which commenced operations in June. This project, which involves relocating the Isle of Man’s ferry services from Pier Head to Princes Dock in Liverpool, experienced both delays and a budget overrun of £32m, although the definitive total cost remains unconfirmed. Previously, in August, the Manannan fastcraft’s journeys faced interruptions because of issues related to the “unsafe motion” of the new terminal’s linkspan, also attributed to tidal conditions. The berthing trials conducted in Liverpool this month also involved the older Ben-My-Chree vessel, alongside its successor, Manxman, with the aim of ensuring “operational flexibility” across the Steam Packet’s entire fleet.
