An early conclusion was brought to a Christmas party for Liverpool FC staff, held at the Anglican cathedral in the city, following reports concerning the discovery of suspected drug paraphernalia. The football club acknowledged an “incident” occurred on Thursday night, stating: “We do not condone or tolerate the use of illegal substances at any of our sites or events.” Neither the club’s players nor first team manager Arne Slot were present at the gathering, which was organized for non-footballing personnel. Cathedral staff brought the party to an end. In a statement, the cathedral indicated that an incident transpired “that was not in line with our values.” Newspaper reports revealed further details, indicating that a search was initiated after an attendee experienced a “medical episode.” Liverpool FC confirmed the staff member was “recovering well” subsequent to hospital treatment and clarified that the medical incident was “unrelated” to the other issues. Images posted on X by club staff depicted an elaborate setup, featuring dining tables illuminated with red light and the Liverpool club crest projected onto the interior walls of the cathedral. A statement from Liverpool FC reiterated: “We do not condone or tolerate the use of illegal substances at any of our sites or events.” It continued: “We thank the events team at the venue for their swift action and professional response to the medical emergency which was unrelated.” The statement concluded: “The member of staff is recovering well.” Liverpool Cathedral, recognized as the largest in Britain and the fifth largest globally, stated that it organizes such events to facilitate keeping the site accessible and free for public entry. A representative further commented: “During an event in the last week, an incident occurred that was not in line with our core values.” They added: “The team on duty followed the correct procedures to bring the event to an early close.” The representative concluded: “We want to thank our staff and Liverpool FC for the swift actions taken and partnership working, and will continue to review our procedures and mitigation measures for future events.”
