Traffic cameras are slated for installation outside an additional six Liverpool primary schools, operational during designated pick-up and drop-off periods. The Liverpool City Council stated that its School Streets initiative, which limits vehicle access to roads adjacent to school entrances, aims to enhance children’s safety and improve air quality. The scheme will be enforced using Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras, with weekday term-time restrictions active from 08:15 to 09:15 and again from 14:30 to 15:30. Certain drivers, specifically those holding a Blue Badge, will be exempt from these restrictions. These restrictions will encompass the vicinities of St Clare’s Catholic Primary School, St Cuthbert’s Catholic Primary School, St Cleopas Church of England Primary School, Christ the King Catholic Primary School, Rice Lane Primary School, and St Michaels in the Hamlet Community Primary School. The council had previously announced plans in November 2023 for the initial two schools to be covered by traffic cameras. The local authority indicated its objective to establish up to 50 School Streets areas over the next four years. It also mentioned that consultations have been conducted at 20 other schools, which could eventually be incorporated into the program. Simon O’Brien, Liverpool City Region’s walking and cycling commissioner, commented: “There is nothing more important than the health of our children. “So clean air and a feeling of calm around our schools at drop-off and pick-up are vital to help the pupils grow and learn in a positive environment.”
