Greg Norman, who held the world number one golf ranking for 331 weeks during the 1980s and 1990s, has stated his expectation of being succeeded as LIV Golf’s chief executive. A report from The New York Times in November indicated that LIV Golf intends to name Scott O’Neil, previously the chief executive of the Philadelphia 76ers basketball team, as its new CEO. Mr. Norman, aged 69, has served as the chief executive of the Saudi-financed organization since October 2021. The two-time Open champion conveyed to Indiana channel WISH-TV, a broadcaster of LIV Golf tournaments within the United States, that he was “fine” with this transition. Norman affirmed, “Is there going to be a new CEO? Yes. There will be a new CEO.” Since its inaugural season in 2022, LIV Golf, which receives financial backing from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), has attracted several prominent golfers globally. Initially adopting a strong opposition to the breakaway tour, the PGA Tour and the European-based DP World Tour declared a “framework agreement” in June 2023 for a potential merger with PIF; however, a definitive agreement has not yet been reached. Norman further remarked, “I’ve seen it [LIV Golf] come from a business model on paper to giving birth on the golf course to where it is today.” He also stated, “Will I always have a place and be involved with LIV to some capacity? Yes. I’ll always have that.” Norman expressed pride in his contribution, adding, “Because the impact that has been created in the game of golf by LIV, I’ve had a small, small piece of that, which I’m proud of.” Mr. Norman has encountered criticism regarding his involvement in establishing LIV Golf, particularly from Rory McIlroy, the four-time major winner from Northern Ireland. In 2022, when the tour was initially established, McIlroy urged Norman to “exit stage left,” asserting that “no one’s going to talk unless there’s an adult in the room.” McIlroy currently serves on the PGA Tour’s transaction committee, which is overseeing the ongoing negotiations between the American-based PGA and PIF.
